The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) offers a centrally governed, integrated, inter-disciplinary curriculum that emphasizes problem-solving and self-directed learning. Courses meeting the degree requirements for the First Professional Medicine Program are available to those students who have been selected by the school's admission committee. There are opportunities for students who have completed their core clinical training at their home school to apply for an elective experience at UPSOM. See the Visiting Student Section below.

The official grading structure of the school for students matriculating as of fall 2012 is as follows:
The first two years of the curriculum are graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. The second two years use a five-level grading scheme which includes Honors, High Satisfactory, Satisfactory, Low Satisfactory, and Unsatisfactory. Incomplete and Withdraw designations may also be given for courses in all four years. This grading structure is recorded on both the University transcript and internal documentation.
